Author assessment and pedagogical considerations:

There are no program notes on York’s “Program and Confession to Santa Cecilia”, nor have I ever had a conversation with her, personally, about it. From a performance aspect, the largest challenge for the performer will be endurance. None of the rhythms are difficult and the solo plays nicely on a bass tuba, but the part is spent in the high range most of the time. Special attention should be paid to the Più Mosso as they tempo is marked as dotted quarter equals 120 in 6/8 time. This section goes by surprisingly quick and should not be slept on. There is a cadenza towards the end of the piece, which is unusual for stand-alone pieces.
