Author assessment and pedagogical considerations:
“Through the Tunnel” does not have any notes that York published. Given the nature of the commission, I would strongly suggest that the title, Through the Tunnel, is a journey of Andrew Smith’s journey through grief with the tragic loss of his fiancée. The sadness, anger, acceptance, and the peace.
From a performer’s outlook, the largest challenge will be making phrasing decisions and the little musical nuances that we try to convey to listeners. The range can become somewhat tiresome for an intermediate level player, but easily done if they are working towards an extended range.
The 6/8 and 9/8 sections should be practiced with a metronome to ensure evenness and crisp articulations. This would be a great spot to record yourself and listen back to ensure you are conveying what is written. Mm. 94 to the end is some of Barbara’s most beautiful writing for tuba. This section is difficult to maintain the melodic line and is taxing on the embouchure. Strict metronome practice and drone practice will help develop the flexibility.
