Author assessment and pedagogical considerations:
“Aspects” is an accessible work written in four movements. It is appropriate for an advanced high school group, but would find its best use in an undergraduate setting. While no program notes exist from York, one can assume from the titles of the movements the intent and story behind each movement. The title of the work, Aspects, gives the impression that we are dealing with aspects of the human condition: body, heart, mind, and soul (spirit).
In considering performance, each instrument is in a comfortable range and the rhythms are straight-forward. This is a great piece to build ensemble and communication among young musicians. This piece is also highly accessible for the general audience member as it is enjoyable to listen to and isn’t too long.
